Selecting and Teaching independent living skills to adults with developmental disabilities

Why shouldn’t we focus on “pre-vocational” activities in our workshops for adults with developmental disabilities, and what the heck should we focus on instead? When teaching functional communication, how should we select which words and phrases to present? If you work with adults with developmental disabilities, you probably try to teach the most useful skills for each individual, always hopeful that each person remembers and applies the skills he/she learned over the long haul. But figuring out which skills to teach, how to teach those skills, and how to give everybody natural opportunities to use those skills can be challenging. Check out this 15-minute behavioral brief, Selecting and Teaching independent living skills to adults with developmental disabilities for ideas!
